Acute ischemia of the extremities is a sudden catastrophic event which not only poses the threat of the loss of a limb at any age, but can also lead to death in the elderly or debilitated. A review of the literature, supplemented by the authors' personal experience, provides the basis for a discussion of pathogenesis, etiology, diagnosis, and principles of treatment.
