Widespread automation across the scope of dental practice, education, research and administration is anticipated. Without a strategic plan to guide automation efforts, the prospects for cohesive automation of the profession are dim. Development of comprehensive data standards and electronic communications protocols are required. A close interaction with similar work in the other health care professions is mandatory.
