</script>It is good to see ourselves as our merciless critics see us. Dr. Crisp is, however, fundamentally wrong when he assumes that the mere acquisition of a degree endows its possessor with the culture and refinement of an age old profession. It is manners that make the man and the want of them the fellow. In these days of rapid social metamorphoses no profession is without its social and intellectual parvenu, and the case quoted by Dr. Crisp only serves to recall that Optometry, like Ophthalmology, has had its age of quackery, and even to-day a few can be found wearing the Mantle of Chevalier Taylor. We can share Dr. Crisp's opinion that the Commercial Optometrist is the real stumbling block to professionalism.
