Abstract A simple calix[4]arene dialkyne diester(C4DE) was designed and synthesized in high yield (80%). C4DE was clicked onto a microstructured Au surface, and showed selective macroscopic recognition of cobalt picrate by orthogonal interactions, detected via contact angle measurements. The proposed wettability sensing device displays good specificity, is fast and easy to use, and should be suitable for the rapid detection of cobalt ions in environmental monitoring.
