The microstructural characteristics of the Ti(3)AlC(2)/Al(2)O(3) interface have been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The orientation relationships (ORs) between the Ti(3)AlC(2) and the Al(2)O(3) oxide scale are shown to be (0001)Ti(3)AlC(2)parallel to(0001)Al(2)O(3) and [1120]Ti(3)AlC(2)parallel to[1210]Al(2)O(3) (OR-1); (0001)Ti(3)AlC(2)parallel to(0001)Al(2)O(3) and [1120]Ti(3)AlC(2)parallel to(1100)Al(2)O(3) (OR-2). A high-resolution TEM image of the interface is presented and two interfacial models are proposed based on the observed orientation relationships.
