The development of this disease is important because it is associated with short-term neonatal morbidity and mortality as well as in the incidence of chronic diseases of adult life. This article mainly reviews the long-term consequences of IUGR in terms of post-natal growth, neurodevelopmental and describes how through the Barker hypothesis this condition is related to heart disease, diabetes mellitus and hypertension.
