Dementias are characterized by an irreversible cognitive decline that affects mainly, but not exclusively, the memory. Dementias mainly affects elderly people, but it is not a normal consequence of aging. There are multiple imaging techniques that support the diagnosis of dementias: some are in clinical use, and other are research techniques. Magnetic resonance imaging standard protocols, visual assessment scales atrophy, cerebral volumetry techniques, fMRI paradigms, resting state functional connectivity, SPECT and PET are the techniques discussed in this article.

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 1 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Average | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
