
Abstract Zone-centre infrared and Raman phonon modes in the normal cubic spinel MgAl2O4 are calculated by applying the rigid-ion model. Elastic properties such as elastic constants, Young’s modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus, compressibility, Poisson’s ratio and anisotropy factor are also calculated. A detailed comparison with available experimental and previously calculated data is presented. An overall good agreement with the experimental and calculated results has been established.
