Many individuals who have vestibular problems also present with hearing loss. Correction of hearing loss assists individuals in their ability to access medical care and to participate in rehabilitation programs that may be associated with their balance problems. Managing physicians or surgeons of the persons who have a vestibular disorder work closely with audiologists to ensure that patients receive appropriate amplification in the course of their treatment. This article describes common forms of hearing loss. The process of selecting, evaluating, verifying, and validating amplification as a treatment for permanent, sensorineural hearing loss is described. Several special amplification technologies are highlighted briefly.
