The operating room (OR) represents a key engine of performance and growth for most hospitals, and its success is vital to the financial viability of the parent institution. Yet, the OR can also be a considerable drain on the hospital’s finances, because surgical procedures are becoming increasingly complex and technologically-intensive, with the arrival of robotic surgery, navigation systems, and hybrid rooms with intraoperative imaging capabilities far beyond the conventional X-rays. The OR is an arena where the interests and drives of many diverse stakeholders converge and compete for limited resources. Thus, sound decision making for management of the OR is imperative. An emerging best practice among leading hospitals is the OR dashboard—an enabling management tool that presents objective information to guide OR decision makers. The dashboard captures data elements from a myriad of sources, helps to analyze them, and highlights what is operationally meaningful in an intuitive format.
