Abstract

Cuestiones para recordar • Los trastornos del espectro autista (TEA) constituyen un grupo de trastornos de diferente etiologia, pero con presentacion clinica semejante. • Actualmente, en la clasificacion del DSM-5 se han suprimido las subcategorias de Autismo infantil, Sindrome de Asperger o Trastorno generalizado del desarrollo por la denominacion generica de TEA. • La clasificacion del DSM-5 tambien reduce las alteraciones clinicas de TEA, de tres dimensiones (sociabilidad, comunicacion y conductas repetitivas o patrones restringidos de interes) a dos dimensiones (deficits en la comunicacion social y patrones de comportamiento, intereses o actividades restringidas). • Las personas con TEA tienen dificultades durante toda la vida, aunque presentan diferentes grados de gravedad y con tendencia general a la mejora de sintomas, pero en grado diferente. • Alrededor de un tercio de las personas con TEA presentan discapacidad intelectual asociada. • Las personas con TEA y capacidad intelectual dentro de la normalidad presentan comparativamente menos dificultades evolutivas en lenguaje y adaptacion funcional y su diagnostico puede pasar desapercibido. • El diagnostico de TEA requiere un proceso de evaluacion elaborado que tambien incluya el diagnostico de comorbilidades medicas o/y psiquiatricas y un diagnostico diferencial con otros cuadros clinicos. • Entre un 50% y un 80% de las personas con TEA tienen uno o mas trastornos psiquiatricos asociados.
