Published by Elsevier oi:10.1016/j.dld.2010.07.002 portion (Fig. 1A, white arrow), with mucosal erosion of the proximal part (Fig. 1A, black arrow). After gentle probing, a fishbone penetrating the submucosa appeared (Fig. 1B), revealing that the mucosal erosionwas due to to-and-fromovements by its sharp tip. The fishbonewas then removedwithout problemswith biopsy forceps (Fig. 1C) and it measured 2 cm in length and 1mm in diameter (Fig. 1D). The patient was observed for 1h and sent home because of no complication. Although more than 80% of foreign bodies that reach the stomachwill pass the gastrointestinal tractwithout problems, somemay lodge in the intestinal wall and remain there even for prolonged periods of time. Complications of foreign body ingestion include obstruction, perforation, and hemorrhage. Thus, early endoscopic or surgical removal of large foreign bodies and of those potentially harmful is recommended [1]. This case emphasizes the importance of accurate observation of unusual findings that led to recognition of the fishbone and to its removal before it could have caused more dangerous complications.
