Survivable IP network realization in IP-over-WDM networks under overlay model

Abstract

The next generation Internet will employ an IP-over-WDM architecture where the links interconnecting the routers in an IP network are realized by lightpaths in a WDM optical network. We consider the survivable IP network realization problem in IP-over-WDM networks under the overlay model where the IP network and the WDM network are managed by different entities. The problem is stated as follows: given an IP network topology, the types and costs of the lightpath services provided by the WDM network, determine the lightpath services needed to realize the IP links so that the IP network remains connected under any single fiber failure and the cost of the IP network is minimized. A previous algorithm called SLA1 [12] solved the problem assuming three lightpath services (Protected, Unprotected, and Dual-Homed) are provided by the WDM network. In this paper, we propose three new lightpath services and present an algorithm that effectively utilizes the new lightpath services to compute survivable IP network realization. Simulation results show that our algorithm can greatly reduce the solution cost compared with SLA1.
