Abstract

Les materiaux ceramiques actives par des ions luminescents se revelent etre des substituts prometteurs des monocristaux comme source laser, grâce notamment a une synthese moins difficile et une capacite de dopage accrue. Bien que ces materiaux ceramiques soient synthetises depuis les annees 60, ce n'est que recemment qu'ils sont devenus vraiment interessant, grâce aux notables progres en synthese, et donc en transparence, ainsi qu'a la forte demande en materiaux pour laser de puissance. C'est dans le domaine des ceramiques YAG :Nd que l'on trouve le plus de travaux et que des performances remarquables ont ete atteintes (puissance 1,5 kW continue). La technique ceramique a egalement ete recemment etendue avec succes a differents composes refractaires dont la croissance cristalline est difficile. De meme, les progres recents dans la devitrification controlee des verres ont permis le developpement de lasers a base de fibre vitroceramique dopee Nd. Les vitroceramiques, dont les proprietes optiques s'apparentent a celles des cristaux, permettent egalement le developpement de dispositifs de declenchement passif de laser ou de doublage de frequence. Les perspectives de developpement des ceramiques et vitroceramiques sont aussi nombreuses que les progres que l'on peut attendre dans leur synthese.
