
Resumen La lipoplastia representa el 29% de las cirugias plasticas cosmeticas. El sindrome de embolismo graso es la tercera causa de las complicaciones asociadas con liposuccion con una mortalidad del 10 a 15% y se define como la rapida aparicion de signos de distres respiratorio, alteraciones hematologicas y neurologicas, que son la consecuencia mecanica, bioquimica o inflamatoria del embolismo de micro o macroparticulas de grasa. El diagnostico plantea un gran reto clinico que implica aclarar el origen de la falla cardiovascular y respiratoria (sindrome de embolismo graso vs. tromboembolismo pulmonar, hemorragia, choque septico, accidentes anestesicos, etc.), frente a la necesidad apremiante de decisiones terapeuticas, en su mayoria medidas de soporte, para las cuales no existen recomendaciones basadas en ensayos clinicos controlados que demuestren su perfil de beneficio y riesgo.
