Publisher Summary This chapter presents the fundamentals of punches in boxing. An effective blow is a punch that produces immediate unconsciousness as the result of a cerebral concussion. A serious hammering blow against the head and body, whose intensity is not high enough to reach the threshold in which a cerebral concussion occurs, contributes to the development of a severe permanent brain damage. This can be deduced from the morphological findings in boxer brains and from the transfer of data from animal models that deal with repeated impacts of subconcussive strength. The chapter discusses the effect of (1) punches into the stomach region, (2) a blow under the heart, and (3) blows against the side of the rib. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the cork-screw punch and solar plexus blows.
