This chapter will review the essential properties of adrenergic receptors in the physiology of cardiac function and in the pathology of cardiovascular disease. Following a systematic overview and a classification of adrenergic receptors, we will discuss the pathophysiological role of the sympathetic nervous system in several conditions including hypertension, heart failure, and metabolism. The chapter is concluded by an updated overview on the pharmacological options available in the clinical scenario to obtain a proper blockade of adrenergic receptors.
