Cancer is a term used for group of more than 120 distinct diseases that are characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body, which are able to invade other tissues, eventually causing death. There are several strategies to treat cancer, including surgery, radiation therapy, immunologic treatment, and chemical-based approaches. Generally, a combination of all these methods is used, and most of the therapeutic approaches to the treatment of cancer comprise a chemical component. Chemotherapy is the treatment of cancer with cytotoxic antineoplastic drugs, and now is one of the traditional methods. Generally, anticancer drugs are divided into three categories: cytotoxic or chemotherapeutic, immunotherapeutic, and hormonal drugs. Temozolomide (Triazene), the cytotoxic agent capecitabine, and the tyrosine kinase inhibitors imatinib (Gleevec) and erlotinib (Tarceva) are included in the list of Top 200 Drugs by sales for the 2010s.
