Abstract Progress in the preparation of fluorine-18 labelled radiopharmaceuticals is reviewed. The pharmacology and design of 18F-labelled organic compounds of biomedical interest, production of the radionuclide and methods of labelling which have been used to date are discussed. Emphasis has been placed on the practical chemical problems encountered, together with the important fields of product purification and quality control.
