Abstract The local structure of Zr4+ in Y2O3-stabilized nanophase zirconia (14 nm) was studied using EXAFS under different sintering temperatures and compacting pressures. An unusual induction of the amplitude of FT(k3χ) of the second ZrM (M = Zr, Y) shell is observed after further consolidation, indicating there are some distorted metal atoms that escape from the inner grain boundaries to grain boundaries between nanocrystallites in nanophase zirconia.
