A postal survey of commercial dental laboratories, specializing in the production of cobalt-chromium castings for partial dentures, was carried out for a period of 14 working days. Fourteen laboratories responded and provided information regarding the communication of instructions from dental surgeons to themselves. Written prescriptions of denture design were provided by dentists in only 36 per cent of the total of 1858 partial dentures. Only 4.6 per cent of casts received by the laboratories exhibited any evidence of tooth preparation, e.g. the provision of rest seats.
