This paper overviews the pharmaceutical industry from a manufacturing perspective. Summarized is the current state of the industry within the U.S. as well as in other countries with significant pharmaceutical manufacturing activity. Various classifications of pharmaceutical products and processes, the concept of biotechnology, and the role of the FDA are briefly introduced. Results of a recent benchmarking study and research issues related to pharmaceutical manufacturing are presented.
