This paper begins by answering a question recently posed by Hunt 'What is nursing ethics?'. Then, a distinction is drawn between principle-based and principle-invoking approaches to nursing ethics. Following an outline of both principle-invoking and care-based approaches, it is proposed that the two approaches may fruitfully be combined in the teaching of nursing ethics.
