Abstract Luminescence spectra and decay times of Sb 3+ in AlPO 4 , LaPO 4 , LiLaP 4 O 12 and calcium fluorapatite (Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 F 2 ) are reported. The luminescence properties of Sb 3+ in AlPO 4 , LaPO 4 and LiLaP 4 O 12 are explained by using existing models. The luminescence properties of Sb 3+ in calcium halophosphate have been reported before, but were not completely understood. We find that a strong Jahn-Teller interaction is working on the relaxed excited state of the Sb 3+ ion from which the luminescence properties can be explained. Evidence is given that Sb 3+ in calcium fluorapatite occupies a Ca 2+ site.
