</script>Abstract The luminescence properties of Ce3+- and Tb3+-activated M3(PO4)2 (M = Sr,Ba) are reported. It is shown that only a small part (⩽ 0.3%) of the M2+ ions can be replaced by Ln3+ ions. At higher concentrations a second phase, M3Ln(PO4)3, is formed. The luminescence properties are due to these two different phases.
