Lipid composition of Sindbis virus

Abstract

Abstract The phospholipid and fatty acid compositions of Sindbis virus prepared from chick embryo fibroblasts and BHK cells were found to be very similar. These were compared to the compositions of the whole cells and plasma membranes of the two hosts. It was found that the viral compositions were distinct from the cellular compositions in both cases and distinct from the chick embryo cell plasma membrane compositions. These results suggest that the lipid composition of viral envelopes reflects the lipid affinities of the viral envelope peptide.
