Abstract The symposium was planned and organized by the Commission on Experimental Petrology at High Pressures and Temperatures (CEPHPT), a commission of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). A central purpose was to present before a wide geological audience papers which illustrated the application of the results of laboratory studies in experimental petrology to deduce the conditions under which natural metamorphic rocks crystallized i.e. the load pressure, temperarure, and activities of mobile components such as H 2 O, CO 2 etc.
