Abstract The luminescence of Ba 3 Nb 2 O 2 F 12 ·2H 2 O and Ba 3 Ta 2 O 2 F 12 are reported. The emission is due to the Nb-O and Ta-O group in the pentagonal bipyramid NbOF 3- 6 and the monocapped trigonal prism TaOF 3- 6 in these compounds. The greenish luminescence shows a large Stokes shift and a high efficiency. A comparison with related systems is also presented.
