Abstract The luminescence and nonlinear optical properties of Ba2MoO3F4 are reported and discussed. The fluoromolybdate luminesces at low temperatures only. The luminescence properties are very similar to those of molybdate groups in the MgWO4 lattice. Ba2MoO3F4 has an effective nonlinear optical tensor coefficient which is eight times larger than that of α-quartz.
