Abstract In all the infants with the Pierre Robin syndrome that I have treated, the appliance was no longer needed after about two months of use. In those with a midline cleft, the part of the prosthesis closing the lip and supporting the nose is removed when surgery is performed on the lip. The balance of the prosthesis creating the palatal contours may be worn to prevent the collapse of the cleft ridge.
