Abstract The luminescence of Ag + in SrB 4 O 7 in the crystalline and glassy modification is reported. Three types of Ag centres are identified. The luminescence of isolated Ag + ions in the crystalline phase is characterized by a relatively long emission wavelength (290 nm), a small Stokes shift (6200 cm −1 ) and a short decay time (14μs at 300 K). Also luminescent Ag + -pairs and non-luminescent Ag 0 are observed. In the glassy modification of SrB 4 O 7 the same Ag centres are observed. The emission bands are shifted to longer wavelengths.
