Abstract Vibronic transition probabilities Avib in the emission spectra of Gd3+ in LaF3, LiYF4, LaAlO3, Cs2, NaGdCl0, La2 O3 and YOCl are reported. The vibronic transition probabilities vary two orders of magnitude: from A vib − 2 s 1 to A vib 114 8 1 for the 6 P 7 2 → 8 S 7 2 transition of Gd3+ in LaF3 and YOCl, respectively. The difference is mainly due to differences in the polarizability of the ligands of Gd3+.
