Abstract An analytic expression is obtained for certain solutions of the transcendental equation encountered in the course of solving the diffraction problem for elastic waves on a circular cylinder and sphere, in the high frequency case. A new expression for the Hankel function is obtained in the region where the argument is large in modulo and the exponent is of the order of the argument.
