Abstract In this paper we present an overview of the problems automated natural language processing is confronted with and present an outline of methods which have been developed for solving these problems. We put particular emphasis on the importance of knowledge and techniques to achieve co-operative system behavior. Moreover, we demonstrate the capabilities of some simple commercial systems and give an outlook for future research directions.
