Abstract Strong vibronic features in the excitation spectra of Pr 3+ in several compounds are reported. The observed vibronic lines belong to electronic transitions with Δ J =2 and Δ J =4. The last case violates existing theories. The intensity of the vibronic lines depends strongly on the host lattice. There are indications that the vibronic intensity depends also on the Pr 3+ concentration.
