Abstract The submandibular glands of young rats killed at intervals after inoculation with the Y strain of Trypanosoma cruzi showed accelerated acinar development together with retarded duct-system maturation particularly in developing granular ducts. Acinar hypertrophy was evident 18 days after inoculation (acute phase); impairment of duct development was found up to 60 days after infection. No histologic or quantitative changes were found in glands of animals killed 97 days or 10–12 months after inoculation (chronic phase).
