Abstract 1. 1. Aggregation of chlorophyll a in various nonpolar solvents has been demonstrated, and from the IR spectra the probable site of the hooking together of the molecules has been deduced. 2. 2. If chlorophyll a exists in the cell in a completely nonpolar milieu (as the visible spectroscopic studies suggest), then CCl4 solutions of chlorophyll a at high concentrations would be an ideal model for further biological studies, since it appears that this system most closely resembles that in nature. 3. 3. It would appear that only small traces, if any, of crystalline chlorophyll a exist in the cell.
