A CHILD born with a congenital facial malformation is handicapped from birth. As he grows and develops, his problems will become increasingly evident to himself and to others. A facial defect may cause the child to feel different from other children and may frustrate him in his attempts to make good and be accepted. Clefts of the lip and/or palate have occurred in the human race for many centuries. In the past these clefts were usually the responsibility of the surgeon. However, the modern trend is to have the pediatrician, the orthodontist, the maxillofacial surgeon, the otolaryngologist, the speech pathologist, aud others work together as a team, beginning soon after the child’s birth. When this approach is followed, our final results are greatly enhanced.
