Abstract In our experience the ultrasoundcardiogram from the anterior mitral leaflet may be used for: 1. 1. Estimating the degree of mitral stenosis and thus deciding whether commissurotomy is indicated or not. 2. 2. Estimating the degree of rigidity in the mitral valve and in this manner selecting cases for open heart surgery. 3. 3. Judging the immediate result after surgery for mitral stenosis. 4. 4. Follow-up studies after surgery for mitral stenosis. Restenosis can be diagnosed early. 5. 5. Differentiating predominant mitral stenosis from predominant mitral regurgitation. 20 6. 6. Estimating whether or not aortic valve disease is combined with mitral stenosis. In patients with the Austin Flint murmur there are no signs of mitral stenosis in the tracing. 20 It is also possible to correlate the valve motion with heart sounds and murmurs and intracardiac pressures. 20
