Abstract

Saatgutproben von Betula platyphylla var. japonica (Herkunfte Hokkaido und Hondo, Japan) wurden im Jahre 1959 ausgesat. Die Jungpflanzen wurden ein Jahr spater in Groshansdorf/Schleswig-Holstein angepflanzt. Im Alter von 37 Jahren wurden bei einer Durchforstung 20 Baume entnommen, von denen ein unterer und ein oberer Stammabschnitt zur Untersuchung der Holzeigenschaften dienten. Fur beide Stammhohen ergab sich eine einheitliche mittlere Rohdichte von 0,60 g/cm3 im normalklimatisierten Zustand. Dagegen entspricht die Rohdichtezunahme vom Mark zum Kambium der bei anderen Birken ublichen Verteilung. Das Holz der untersuchten Baume besitzt geringere mechanische Eigenschaften, aber gunstigere Quell- und Schwindmase als das Holz europaischer Birken.
