Current scenarios for the large-scale structure of the universe lead to rather precise predictions for the structure and evolution of primeval galaxies. These scenarios are reviewed, and models of protogalaxies are described. I discuss the origin of the first stars, and the chemical evolution of galaxies. The role of environment in affecting galaxy properties is described, and I conclude with a summary of various tests of galaxy formation theory.
