A method is presented for classifying the various types of thermomechanical treatment in terms of the nature of the structure deformed and the type and point of formation of the transformation products. Classes of treatment are discussed from the viewpoint of both the strengthening mechanisms involved and the property changes observed. Comparisons of properties obtained by different treatments are made.
