An examination of sixteenth-century Spanish Basque whale oil casks has resulted in the construction of cultural production structure models which identify historic techniques of coopering manufacture and maintenance, predict material products and by-products, and postulate relationships among the cultural processes of procurement, manufacture, use, discard, recycling and maintenance.
