The first annual Metals and Metals Processing Conference of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) was held during mid-August in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Hosted by the Wilmington-Philadelphia Chapter of SAMPE, this conference was the first attempt by SAMPE, a technical society normally associated more with materials other than metals, to hold a meeting devoted solely to metals. The three-day conference featured a total of 12 technical sessions which explored such topics as aluminumlithium processing, cleanliness and advances in steel and nickel alloy production, alloy development, coatings and corrosion, metal fabrication, metal matrix composites, powder metallurgy, and cost reduction through heat treating and processing. A metals exhibition was also conducted and included both primary producers, processors and component fabrications.
