Abstract

Het Foreign Accent Syndrome is een zeldzaam, maar intrigerend verschijnsel. Zoals in het voorgaande artikel is beschreven, is het meestal het gevolg van een laesie in de linker frontoparietale hersendelen, maar er is ook melding gemaakt van subcorticaal letsel. De naam van het syndroom doet vermoeden dat iemand na het hersenletsel met een buitenlands accent gaat praten, maar dat is natuurlijk niet zo. De patient spreekt anders dan voorheen en dat wordt door de hoorder ervaren als een buitenlands accent. Of men een buitenlands accent herkent en om welk buitenlands accent het dan gaat, hangt af van de ervaring die de hoorder heeft in het luisteren naar tweedetaalsprekers. In Nederland zal men niet snel zeggen dat iemand met een Birmees of Roemeens accent spreekt, simpelweg omdat met niet bekend is met dergelijke accenten. Dat is ook in het bovenstaande artikel het geval: er wordt gesproken van een Pools, Duits, Aziatisch en Indonesisch accent. Dat zijn accenten waar de Nederlander bekend mee is. Kortom, het Foreign Accent Syndrome is in the ear of the beholder.
