Abstract

Studies met als onderwerp de cervicale tussenwervelschijf hebben aangetoond dat deze in morfologisch opzicht afwijkt van de lumbale tussenwervelschijf. Toch bracht een overzicht van de klinische literatuur aan het licht dat toch klinische theorieen vaak zijn gebaseerd op de veronderstelling dat de cervicale en lumbale tussenwervelschijven een vergelijkbare structuur hebben. Het doel van dit artikel is een overzicht te geven van de literatuur met betrekking tot de morfologie van de cervicale tussenwervelschijf in relatie tot de klinische theorie van McKenzie die stelt dat de nucleus pulposus van de volwassen cervicale tussenwervelschijf kan worden teruggebracht op zijn plaats. Bespreking van de gepresenteerde biologische mechanismen die ten grondslag liggen aan de onderzoeks- en behandeltechnieken is noodzakelijk, wil men de grondslag van deze technieken beter begrijpen.
