Zelfmanagement van astma

Abstract

Bij astma is het vaak moeilijk om tot een optimale aanpak te komen waarin patient en huisarts zich beiden kunnen vinden. Op grond van de pathofysiologie van astma is onderhoudsbehandeling met inhalatiecorticosteroiden de basis van de medicamenteuze behandeling. Patienten daarentegen ervaren hun astma veelal als een ziekte met goede en slechte periodes. Tijdens de goede periodes gaan zij probleemloos door het leven en tijdens de slechte periodes bestrijden zij hun symptomen snel met bronchusverwijders. Dat deze verschillen in ziekte-inzicht en -beleving leiden tot verschillende opvattingen over de beste behandeling is evident. Ook bij niet-medicamenteuze adviezen kunnen verschillende opvattingen van artsen en patienten over wat wenselijk en wat haalbaar is een barriere zijn om optimaal met astma om te gaan.
