Abstract

Het verbeteren van de therapietrouw staat de laatste jaren in toenemende mate in de belangstelling. Hoewel er steeds meer medicijnen zijn ontwikkeld met een goede werkzaamheid, blijkt er bij bepaalde patientengroepen sprake van een slechte medicijninname of veel uitval. Vooral bij depressie is therapietrouw gecompliceerd vanwege de lange behandelingsduur en de mogelijkheid van terugval. Bovendien stoppen veel depressieve patienten in de eerste paar weken van de behandeling voortijdig met het innemen van hun medicatie als gevolg van bijwerkingen. Aangezien deze bijwerkingen vooral in de eerste weken van de behandeling optreden is het van belang dat de therapietrouw van depressieve patienten juist in deze fase verbetert. Voorlichting door de arts is een belangrijk element in het verbeteren van de therapietrouw. Naast de gebruikelijke mondelinge voorlichting is het mogelijk om patienten extra informatie mee naar huis te geven. Dit kunnen brochures zijn, maar ook cassettebandjes, cd's, cd-roms of video's. Dit artikel gaat over de effecten van het geven van extra informatie op de therapietrouw en de verschillen tussen mondelinge en schriftelijke informatie.
