Inleiding: In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op argumenten, die de noodzaak van structurele docenttrainingen in het medisch opleidingscontinuum onderstrepen. Aan de hand van de literatuur komen enkele rollen, modellen en domeinen aan de orde, die onderscheiden kunnen worden in relatie tot klinische docenttaken en er worden voorbeelden van trainingsprogramma’s voor docenten gegeven.
