North-south asymmetry of cosmic rays

Abstract

The north-south asymmetry of cosmic rays is experimentally studied at Hyderabad, India; λ=7·7° N. and altitude 1,800 feet above mean sea level. A triple coincidence counter telescope with a resolution of 7°2′ in the zenith and 67°22′ in the lateral plane is employed. Observations are taken at several zenith angles. The results show the southern excess of intensities at most of the zenith angles. There is a reversal of the sign of asymmetry at zenith angles 45° and 55°, which is reported for the first time at such a low latitude of 7·7° N. The values of asymmetry near the zenith and the horizon are in general agreement with the theory.
